About

Durwin Foster, MA, RCC, CCC, completed a Master of Arts in Counselling Psychology, is certified in British Columbia, Canada, as a Registered Clinical Counsellor, and at the national level through the Canadian Counselling and Psychotherapy Association. Durwin is also a Certified Integral Therapist. Whatever the personal, relationship or life challenge you are facing, Durwin works with you to achieve wholeness. Each of us desires a sense of wholeness more than anything else, so when we aren’t feeling that way in any area of life, we are internally motivated to heal.

Durwin brings his 20 years of professional education and experience to the task of supporting your natural desire to be whole.

Sometimes what is also happening is that you are already whole and simply not recognizing that to be true. This insight of being “already whole” comes from an approach called “effortless mindfulness” or “the practice of no problem”. Durwin can help you in the initial steps of an effortless mindfulness practice, while making referrals to spiritual teachers as needed.

Durwin takes seriously the principle that to be an effective helper, he needs to engage in ongoing professional development and “deliberate practice”. For example, Durwin completed all required doctoral level coursework and practice in supervision, while also performing research on the benefits of mindfulness training. A recipient of the Mind and Life Institute’s Varela Memorial Award, he was once invited to a conference with His Holiness the Dalai Lama on the topic of contemplative practices and health.

Durwin’s most recent professional development has included education in embodied trauma healing (called The Realization Process), Emotionally-Focused Therapy for Couples, the Ideal Parent protocol for resolving relationship issues, and Full-Spectrum Mindfulness, an approach that combines mindfulness with developmental psychology to help us to integrate any of our unmet needs from our past. All of these approaches are combined into a counselling approach that is sensitive to our diverse cultural, gender and class identities.

Durwin can help you with challenges related to strong emotions such as anger, sadness, shame, fear, and envy or jealousy. Durwin has trained in the Embodying Emotions method developed by Dr. Raja Selvam, and has spent the last five years as an anger management specialist.

Finally, Durwin has many years of couples counselling experience. For couples, Durwin takes an approach that integrates the skill-building style of the Gottman Method and Non-Violent Communication, with the attachment-informed approach of Emotionally Focused Therapy.
